Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and had experienced physical or sexual abuse, DVHOTHFAMLAWM indicates whether they sought help from some other male-in-law or family member to stop that abuse.

Comparability

Differences resulting from the question wording for the variable DVHANY (D119Y) may limit the comparability of DVHOTHFAMLAWM across samples. In effect, while most samples ask if the woman has "ever" sought help from some other male-in-law or family member to stop such abuse, some samples ask if the woman sought help from some other male-in-law or family member to stop such abuse within "the past year"

Variation in response category wording may also affect the comparability of this variable. Some surveys reference only male "in-laws," while others refer to both in-laws and relatives.

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVHOTHFAMLAWM is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is based on a question included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.

The Burkina Faso survey only references male "in-laws" in the response category for this question.

Comparability — Cambodia [top]

The 2000 Cambodia survey asks separately about whether the woman has been physically hurt by "other male in-law" and "other male family." These two response categories are combined in DVHOTFAMLAWM.

  • Burkina Faso 2010: Women age 15-49 who were selected for the domestic violence module and who have experienced physical violence from someone other than their husband since they were 15, have been physically hurt by someone during pregnancy, or have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual violence from their husband or partner at any point in time.
  • Cambodia 2000: Women age 15-49 who were selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module, and who have ever experienced physical viollence since age 15, while pregnant, or at any time from their current/former husband/partner, or sexual violence from their current/former husband/partner, or experienced any physical result from their current/former husband/partner's actions.
  • Cameroon 2004: Women age 15-49 who were selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and who have experienced physical violence from someone other than their husband since they were 15, have been physically hurt by someone during pregnancy, or have experienced physica or sexual violence from their husband or partner at any point in time.
