Description
For women married to or living with a man who had more than one wife/partner, WIFERANK (V506) reports the woman's rank among her husband's/partner's wives/partners.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, the comparability of WIFERANK (V506) may be limited by changes in who counted as a "wife" in the complementary and preceding variable WIFENUM. Some surveys asked only about the number of "wives"; other surveys included "women lived with as if married" along with "wives" when determining whether the respondent was her husband/partner's only wife. See the Comparability section of WIFENUM for further detail.
The question wording for WIFERANK itself ("Are you the first, second ... wife?) was consistent across most samples.
