Description

HCMNM7 indicates whether the woman reported a "private traditional birth attendant" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Namibia.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMNM7 is combined with HCMNM8 (private traditional healer) in HCMPRIVHL (all private traditional birth attendants and healers) for the 2006 Namibia sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMNM7 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMNM7 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMNM7 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHL, a variable that encompasses private traditional birth attendants and traditional healers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNM7 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for Namibia 2006.
