Description
VACBCGMO_AF reports the month that children received the BCG vaccination, according to the Solar Hijri calendar. This information is only available for children born in the 5 years before the survey whose BCG vaccination date was recorded on a card shown to the interviewer. VACBCGMO_AF is only available for the Afghan samples.
The complementary variables VACBCGDAY_AF and VACBCGYR_AF report the day of the month and the year of the BCG vaccination according to the Solar Hijri calendar, as recorded on a vaccination card shown to the interviewer.
According to the DHS Recode Manuals, the vaccination date may be coded as "Inconsistent" if the reported date is inconsistent with the date of birth, the date of interview, or the dates of other vaccinations.
To identify all young children who received the BCG vaccination, including those identified through the mother's report rather than a dated vaccination card, see VACBCG (H2).
Comparability
All standard date variables in Afghanistan DHS samples are given in the Solar Hijri calendar. The Solar Hijri calendar year consists of 12 months of 29 to 31 days. The first 6 months (Hamal through Sonbola) each contain 31 days, the following 5 months (Mizan through Dalvae) each contain 30 days, and the last month (Hut) contains 29 days (30 in a leap year). The Solar Hijri calendar begins on the March equinox, which usually falls around March 21 in the Gregorian calendar. In general, the Solar Hijri calendar is 621 or 622 years behind the Gregorian calendar.
