Description

HCMBAR indicates whether the woman reported a bar as a source for male condoms.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMBAR has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

The wording of responses in HCMBAR varies across samples, ranging from "bar" to multiple locations such as "bar, nightclub or hotel." Users of this variable should consult the Survey Text tab for samples of interest. Samples that depart significantly in response wording or organization are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward. HCMBAR is country-specific and not part of the standard DHS questionnaire.
