FCCIRCDAU reports whether the woman's (eldest living) daughter has been circumcised. Question wording and response categories vary across samples. See Comparability.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, there is considerable variation in question wording and structure for FCCIRCDAU.

For the majority of samples, FCCIRCDAU is asked of the woman's eldest living daughter. Most of these samples provide a simple yes/no response set. A minority of these samples provide an additional "not yet" response, to accommodate for women planning to circumcise their eldest daughters.

For some samples, the variable consolidates two questions, with an initial inquiry asking whether the woman's eldest daughter has been circumcised and, if yes, a probe asking the type of circumcision. To maximize comparability of responses across these samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for FCCIRCDAU, with all affirmative responses coded with 2 in the first digit, and with the second digit distinguishing the type of circumcision. Samples with this question structure are discussed in greater detail below.

For some samples, the question is not specific to the woman's eldest daughter. Instead, the woman is asked if any of her living daughters have been circumcised. These samples are discussed in greater detail below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FCCIRCDAU is a country-specific variable and is included in neither the standard DHS questionnaire nor in any version of the standard DHS module on female circumcision.
