FCTOTALDAU (G108) reports the total number of the woman's living daughters who were circumcised at the time of the interview.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, question wording varies considerably in FCTOTALDAU (G108), which limits the variable's comparability.

For most samples, the woman first indicated whether any of her living daughters had been circumcised. If so, she reported how many daughters had been circumcised.

For some samples, the woman was asked about circumcision for all daughters under age 15. The number of daughters circumcised was determined by the woman's responses to yes/no questions about whether each daughter under 15 years of age was circumcised.

Only samples with additional comparability problems, such as differing age ranges for the daughters included in the question, are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

While FCTOTALDAU (G108) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire, the question is included in all phases of the standard DHS module on female circumcision. Question wording changed across phases, as described below.

The first two phases of the standard DHS module on female circumcision asked about all living daughters. The woman was first asked whether any of her living daughters had been circumcised and, if yes, was asked how many living daughters were circumcised.

The third phase of the standard DHS module on female circumcision asked instead about all living daughters under age 15. The woman was asked, in turn, whether each living daughter age 0-14 had been circumcised. The number of daughters circumcised was then determined as a numerical aggregate of the affirmative responses.
