HCMIA17 indicates whether the woman reported some other public community-based worker as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to India. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific categories included in a particular sample.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMIA17 is combined with HCMIA16 (public accredited social health activist (ASHA)) and in HCMPUBFW (all public fieldworkers) for the 2019 India sample.

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMIA17 are encouraged to review HCMPUBFW for a more comprehensive response category.

HCMIA17 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMIA17 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBFW, a variable that encompasses all public fieldworkers as sources of male condoms.
