Description

HCMPUBFW (V762AE) indicates whether the woman reported a public fieldworker as a source for male condoms.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of public field workers that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in HCMPUBFW.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPUBFW (V762AE) has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

Responses included in HCMPUBFW are consistently organized under the "Public Sector" or "Public Medical Sector" header in the survey. Most commonly, this category is worded as "fieldworker." In some cases, multiple categories were consolidated in HCMPUBFW to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMPUBFW (V762AE) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS questionnaire. It is removed in phase VI of the standard DHS questionnaire and replaced with "Country-specific public sector." Samples from Phase III are also included in this variable. For discussion of differences between phases in this variable series, see the Comparability - Standard DHS tab of HCMDK.

Comparability — Benin [top]

In the 2011 Benin survey, there are separate categories for fieldworker, health worker, and community health worker. Because HCMPUBFW focuses on all public fieldworkers, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Fieldworker is listed as HCMBJ1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Health worker is listed as HCMBJ2 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Community health worker is listed as HCMBJ3 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

The Burkina Faso 2010 survey words this response category as "community/village fieldworker." The response is organized under the "other source" header, combining public and private fieldworker sources.

Comparability — Cote d'Ivoire [top]

The Cote d'Ivoire survey words this response category as "health agent."

Comparability — Ghana [top]

The Ghana 2008 survey words this response category as "fieldworker/outreach/peer educator." As "outreach" often means "mobile clinic" in DHS data, this variable may incorporate a broader range of responses and pose comparability issues for this sample.

Comparability — India [top]

The India 2005 survey words this response category as "ASHA [Accredited Social Health Worker]." This term refers to a community health worker accredited by the Ministry of Public Health.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

In the Malawi 2010 survey, there are separate categories for "CBDA [community based distribution agent]/Door-to-door" and "HSA [health surveillance assistant]." Because HCMPUBFW focuses on all public fieldworkers, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • HSA is listed as HCMMW6 in IPUMS-DHS
  • CBDA is listed as HCMMW8 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Nepal [top]

The 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal surveys words this response category "FCHV [Female Community Health Volunteer]."

Comparability — Niger [top]

The Niger 2006 survey words this response category "community health agent."

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The Nigeria 2003 survey words this category as "community health worker."

The 2008 and 2013 Nigerian surveys use the standard "fieldworker" wording.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The Uganda 2011 survey words this response category as "village health team." The 2001 and 2006 Ugandan surveys use the term "government community-based distribution".

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The Zimbabwe 2005 and 2010 surveys word this response category as "village/farm health worker," specifying that the fieldworker source is rural. For a similar variable using "community-based distribution" wording (under the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council), see HCMZW2.
