Description

HCMML10 indicates whether the woman reported a "shop" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Mali.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMML10 is combined with HCMML11 (kiosk) in HCMSHOP (all shops/retailers) for the Mali samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMML10 are encouraged to review HCMSHOP for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMML10 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMML10 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMSHOP, a variable that encompasses all shops/retailers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMML10 or the Comparability tab of HCMSHOP for more information on the specific categories combined for the Mali samples.
