Description

For women who gave birth in the last 5 years and who received antenatal care during a pregnancy, ANCEG1_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported receiving such care at a public "urban hospital." This response category is country-specific to Egypt.

ANCEG1_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCEG1_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCEG1_02, ANCEG1_03, ANCEG1_04, ANCEG1_05, and ANCEG1_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCEG1_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Some samples in the "ANC" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

ANCEG1_ALL is combined with ANCEG2_ALL (public rural hospital) in ANCPUBHOS_01 (all public hospitals) for the 2005, 2008, and 2014 Egypt samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCEG1_ALL are encouraged to review ANCPUBHOS_01 for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

ANCEG1_ALL has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on where antenatal care was sought is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although ANCEG1_0 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in ANCPUBHOS_01, a variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of antenatal care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of ANCEG1_ALL or the Comparability tab of ANCPUBHOS_01 for more information on the specific categories combined for Egypt 2005, 2008, and 2014.
