Description

ATNGO indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a non-governmental organization (NGO) as a place to be tested for the AIDS virus.

Some samples in the "AT" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of NGOs that could be combined in ATNGO to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, the wording and organization of ATNGO varies somewhat across samples. This variable is ultimately concerned with whether any NGO source was reported, not about the specific type of NGO facility reported.

In some cases, samples included multiple NGO sources in distinct response categories. For example, a sample might include "NGO health facility" and "NGO VCT center" as separate response options. As ATNGO focuses on all NGO sources, IPUMS-DHS consolidates these response categories in this variable to form a single, comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Due to the variation in category wording, IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab.

Most commonly, this variable included women who have heard of HIV/AIDS and have never been tested for HIV/AIDS. Other samples diverge from this standard, and in these cases, researchers may wish to exclude women who have not heard of HIV/AIDS (using AIDSHEARD) and who have been tested for HIV/AIDS (using AIDTESTEV).

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where one can get tested for the AIDS virus is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire. Responses are country-specific.

Comparability — Eswatini (Swaziland) [top]

In the 2006 Eswatini survey, there are separate categories for "NGO - FLAS (Family Life Association of Swaziland), "NGO - TASC (The AIDS Support Center)," and "other NGO." As ATNGO focuses on all NGO sources, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • NGO - FLAS (Family Life Association of Swaziland) is listed as ATSZ4 in IPUMS-DHS
  • NGO - TASC (The AIDS Support Center) is listed as ATSZ5 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Other NGO is listed as ATSZ6 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

In the 2011 Ethiopia survey, there are separate categories for "NGO health facility," "NGO VCT center," "NGO mobile clinic," and "other NGO." As ATNGO focuses on all NGO sources, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • NGO health facility is listed as ATET1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • NGO VCT center is listed as ATET2 in IPUMS-DHS
  • NGO mobile clinic is listed as ATET3 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Other NGO is listed as ATET4 in IPUMS-DHS

For the 2005 Ethiopia sample, "NGO health facility" and "NGO VCT center" are consolidated in ATNGO.

Comparability — Myanmar [top]

In the 2015 Myanmar survey, there are separate categories for "Marie Stopes International," Myanmar Red Cross," "Population Services International/Myanmar," "Myanmar Medical Association," and "other NGO." As ATNGO focuses on all NGO sources, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Marie Stopes International is listed as ATMM1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Myanmar Red Cross is listed as ATMM2 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Population Services International/Myanmar is listed as ATMM3 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Myanmar Medical Association is listed as ATMM4 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Other NGO is listed as ATMM5 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Nepal [top]

In the 2006, 2011, and 2016 Nepal surveys, there are separate categories for different NGO sources.
