Description

ATPRIVVCT (V784L) indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a private voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) center as a place to be tested for the AIDS virus.

Some samples in the "AT" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable such as ATPRIVVCT while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in response category wording, ATPRIVVCT (V784L) is largely comparable across samples. Most commonly, samples categorized this response under a "Private Medical Sector" header and referred to "private VCT center." Some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Most commonly, this variable included women who have heard of HIV/AIDS and have never been tested for HIV/AIDS. Other samples diverge from this standard, and in these cases, researchers may wish to exclude women who have not heard of HIV/AIDS (using AIDSHEARD) and who have been tested for HIV/AIDS (using AIDTESTEV).

Comparability - Standard DHS

ATPRIVVCT (V784L) first appears in Phase V of the Standard DHS questionnaire. From Phase VII, this category is listed as "stand-alone HTC center," which stands for HIV Testing and Counselling. Yet, some countries still use VCT.

Comparability — Chad [top]

The 2014 Chad sample lists this response category as "Community voluntary testing center (CDV)" under the "Other" category.

Comparability — Mali [top]

Mali 2006 lists this response category as "CDV," which stands for Conseil Dépistage Volontaire and translates into VCT in English (not to be confused for the Center for Vaccine Development, which also works with the HIV virus).

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa sample lists this response category as "New Start testing site."

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

The Tanzania 2010 survey organizes this response category under the "other" header, along with "private pharmacy" and "NGO" responses. This survey does not specify whether the VCT is public or private, although a 2002 research report here states that the majority of VCT centers in East Africa are organized by NGOs, and are thus part of the "private" sector.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

In the 2005 Zimbabwe survey, there are separate categories for "private VCT center" and "Other private VCT center." As ATPRIVVCT covers all private VCT centers, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Private VCT center is listed as ATZW8 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Other private VCT center is listed as ATZW9 in IPUMS-DHS

The 2010 and 2015 Zimbabwe surveys include separate categories for "New Start Centre," a type of VCT center based in Zimbabwe, and "mobile VCT center." These responses are consolidated with "other private VCT center" in ATPRIVVCT for those samples. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • New Start Centre is listed as ATZW7 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Mobile VCT center is listed as ATZW10 in IPUMS-DHS
