Description

CONUSMAN3 (V761C) indicates whether the woman used a condom the last time she had sex with her third most recent sex partner (from the last 12 months).

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, CONUSMAN3 (V761C) is largely comparable across samples.

To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding with "Yes" responses having a first digit of "1." The second digit distinguishes between "Yes, male condom" (code "11") and "Yes, female condom" (code "12"), when this additional information is available.

Researchers concerned with temporal ordering of sex partners 2 and 3 should pay special attention to the survey text and surrounding questions. These researchers may find variables SXTIMETOPAR2 and SXTIMETOPAR3 useful.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CONUSMAN3 (V761C) first appears in phase V of the Standard DHS questionnaire as an addendum to the question "The last time you had sexual intercourse, was a condom used?" (see CONUSMAN1). This variable is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.
