Description

For women who gave birth in the last three to five years, DELMG1_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a nurse gave delivery care for a recent birth. This response category is country-specific to Madagascar.

DELMG1_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELMG1_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELMG1_02, DELMG1_03, DELMG1_04, DELMG1_05, and DELMG1_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELMG1_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Some samples in the "DEL" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

DELMG1_ALL is combined with DELMG2_ALL (midwife) for the 1992 and 1997 Madagascar samples to create the standard variable DELNURM_ALL. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DELMG1_ALL are encouraged to review DELNURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, DELMG1_ALL has no comparability problems.

Though DELMG1_ALL is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in DELNURM_ALL, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of delivery care. Universe
