DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL (M68_X)
Person who checked respondent's health after discharge/delivery at home

DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL variables are 4-digit variables.

See DELPPCHKAWHO_01 for the relevant codes.

Description

For women who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey, who delivered their child away from a health facility or did not receive a health check before being discharged from a health facility, and who received a health check later, DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL (M68_X) reports who conducted the respondent's postpartum health check (for a recent birth). Response categories vary across samples. See Comparability.

DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELPPCHKAWHO_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELPPCHKAWHO_02, DELPPCHKAWHO_03, DELPPCHKAWHO_04, DELPPCHKAWHO_05, and DELPPCHKAWHO_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, the response categories for DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL vary across samples.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in the original DHS variable (M68_X). The major categories are:

  • 1000: Health professionals
  • 2000: Other person

The second, third, and fourth digits of DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL's codes distinguish between specific locations and provide detail present in only some samples.

When response categories include non-standard groupings, IPUMS-DHS codes those groupings as a sub-category under the most qualified of the group (e.g., "Doctor/clinical officer" (code "1110") is a sub-category of "Doctor" (code "1100")).

Surveys that collected information on who gave the health check for more than just the most recent birth are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DELPPCHKAWHO_ALL (M68_1) is included in Phase V and VII of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

The 2008 Egypt survey collected this information for all births in the reference period.

Comparability — Myanmar [top]

The 2015 Myanmar survey includes mothers who delivered away from a health facility and received a health check after delivery. The related variable, DELPPCHKBWHO_ALL (M52_x), includes mothers who delivered at a health facility and received a health check either before or after discharge
