DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL (M51_X)
Respondent health check timing

DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL variables are 3-digit variables.

See DELPPCHKBTIM_01 for the codes for these variables.

Description

For women who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and who received a health check after delivering their child, DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL (M51_x) reports the timing of their postpartum health check in hours, days or weeks.

DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL consists of a set of six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELPPCHKBTIM_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELPPCHKBTIM_02, DELPPCHKBTIM_03, DELPPCHKBTIM_04, DELPPCHKBTIM_05, and DELPPCHKBTIM_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Most surveys collected this information for only the most recent birth (DELPPCHKBTIM_01). Surveys in which the data were collected for additional births are noted in the comparability section.

The related variable DELPPCHKB_ALL (M50_x) indicates whether the woman received a postpartum health check.

Comparability

DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL (M51_x) varies significantly in terms of which women are asked this question, ranging from all women who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey, to specifically women who gave birth at a health facility. Users should be attentive to the "Universe" tab when using this variable.

Along with these universe differences and minor variation in question wording, DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL (M51_x) differs across samples and Phases in terms of the time units for reporting. Some samples reported the interval between the birth and the health check in terms of hours, days, or weeks, while others (discussed below) recorded the interval only in days or weeks.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL (M51_x) first appears in phase IV of the standard DHS questionnaire. The variable is removed in phase V and reintroduced in phase VI. DELPPCHKBTIM_ALL is consistent across phases in which the variable is included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
