Comparability

The comparability of DVPKICKFQ across samples is limited by differences in the wording of the preceding survey question, which is associated with DVPKICK (D105D). For most samples that include DVPKICKFQ, DVPKICK indicates whether the woman's husband has ever kicked her, dragged her, or beaten her up. Some samples ask only about kicking and dragging, omitting the reference to being beaten up. As a follow-up variable to DVPKICK, DVPKICKFQ reports the frequency of such actions. See the comparability text for DVPKICK for a list of surveys that omit a reference to being beaten up.

Additionally, there are universe differences that limit the comparability of DVPKICKFQ across samples.

Only those samples with comparability issues not addressed in DVPKICK are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPKICKFQ is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

For Egypt 2005, DVPKICK, which precedes DVPKICKFQ in the survey, does not ask whether the woman had been beaten up by her husband. It only asks whether the woman had been kicked or dragged by her husband. This difference in wording limits the comparability of DVPKICKFQ across samples.

As a second comparability issue, the universe for the Egypt 2005 sample includes only those women who have ever been kicked or dragged by their husband. As a consequence, the category "Not kicked or dragged" is not available for that sample. For all other samples, "Not kicked or dragged" indicates that the woman had never been kicked or dragged (or beaten up) by her husband/partner.

To achieve comparability across all samples, analysts may wish to recode DVPKICKFQ for Egypt 2005 so that persons who have a "No" response in DVPKICK are coded in DVPKICKFQ as "Not kicked or dragged" (code 0) rather than "Not in universe" (code 99).

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.
