Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPKNFTHUSEF reports how often the woman was threatened or attacked with a knife, gun, or other weapon by her husband/partner in the past 12 months. The related variable DVPKNFTHUSE indicates whether the woman was ever threatened or attacked with a knife, gun, or other weapon. These variables are based on solitary questions that do not distinguish between threats and attacks with weapons.

Similar variables included in other samples are based on two questions that separately cover threats versus attacks with weapons in the past 12 months. Specifically, DVPKNIFETHFQ and DVPKNIFEUSEF respectively cover threats versus attacks with weapons in the past 12 months.

Comparability — Index

GENERAL
South Africa

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, DVPKNFTHUSEF has no comparability problems.

Maximizing the number of samples analyzed to study intimate partner violence with a weapon in the past year requires counting all women with an affirmative answer to any of the following three variables: DVPKNFTHUSEF, DVPKNIFETHFQ, and DVPKNIFEUSEF. This approach does not allow the analyst to distinguish between threats and attacks with a weapon in the past 12 months.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPKNFTHUSEF is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases V, VI, VII of the standard domestic violence module.
