Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPKNIFEUSEF reports how often the woman was attacked with a knife, gun, or other weapon by their husband/partner in the past 12 months.

Many samples that asked specifically about attacks with a weapon included another question about a partner's threats with a weapon in the past 12 months, with responses in the variable DVPKNIFETHFQ.

Another group of samples, which contain the variable DVPKNFTHUSEF, asked about either threats or attacks with a weapon from a partner in the past 12 months.

Comparability

There are universe differences that limit the comparability of DVPKNIFEUSEF across samples. Only those countries with serious comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Maximizing the number of samples analyzed to study intimate partner violence with a weapon in the past year requires counting all women with an affirmative answer to any of the following three variables: DVPKNFTHUSEF, DVPKNIFETHFQ, and DVPKNIFEUSEF. This approach does not allow the analyst to distinguish between threats and attacks with a weapon in the past 12 months.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPKNIFEUSEF is neither included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase nor in any phase of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

The universe for the Egypt 2005 sample includes only those women who have ever been attacked with a weapon by their husband. As a consequence, the category "Not attacked" is not available for that sample. For all other samples, "Not attacked" indicates that the woman had never been attacked with a weapon by her husband/partner.

To achieve comparability across all samples, analysts may wish to recode DVPKNIFEUSEF for Egypt 2005 so that persons who have a "No" response in DVPKNIFEUSE (D105G) are coded in DVPKNIFEUSEF as "Not attacked" (code 0) rather than "Not in universe" (code 99).
