Description
For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPPUNCHFQ reports how often the woman was punched by her husband/partner in the past 12 months.

Comparability
The comparability of DVPPUNCHFQ across samples is limited both by universe differences and by differences in the wording of the preceding survey question, which is associated with DVPPUNCH (D105C).
Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DVPPUNCHFQ is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The universe for the Egypt 2005 sample includes only those women who have ever been punched by their husband. As a consequence, the category "Not punched" is not available for that sample. For all other samples, "Not punched" indicates that the woman had never been punched by her husband/partner.
To achieve comparability of universe across all samples, including Egypt 2005, analysts may wish to recode DVPPUNCHFQ so that it only reflects punching in the past 12 months among those who have ever been punched. To do this, "Not punched" (code 0) will need to be recoded as "Not in universe" (code 99). "Yes, timing and frequency unknown" (code 20) will need to be recoded as "Missing" (code 98). The remaining categories will indicate frequency of punching in the past year for those who have ever been punched: "Often" (code 11), "Sometimes" (code 12), and "Not in the past 12 months" (code 13).
Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]
The wording of the survey question associated with DVPPUNCH, to which DVPPUNCHFQ is a follow-up, is substantially different for the Zimbabwe 2005 sample than for all other samples that contain the variable. In a single question, the Zimbabwe 2005 survey asks whether the woman's husband/partner had ever done any of the following: punched her with his fist or with something that could hurt her, kicked her, dragged her, or beaten her up. Thus, DVPPUNCHFQ reports the frequency of those actions.
Other samples, including Zimbabwe 2010 and 2015, ask only about the frequency of punching and include a separate variable (DVPKICKFQ) that reports the frequency of kicking, dragging, or (in some samples) being beaten up.
