Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPPUSHFQ reports how often the woman had been pushed, shaken, or had something thrown at her by her husband/partner in the past 12 months.

Comparability — Index

GENERAL
Egypt
South Africa
Zimbabwe

Comparability

The comparability of DVPPUSHFQ across samples is limited by both universe differences and by differences in the wording of the preceding survey question, which is associated with DVPPUSH (D105A).

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPPUSHFQ is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

The universe for the Egypt 2005 sample includes only those women who have ever been pushed or shaken by their husband. As a consequence, the category "Not pushed or shaken" is not available for that sample. For all other samples, "Not pushed or shaken" indicates that the woman had never been pushed or shaken by her husband/partner.

To achieve comparability across all samples, analysts may wish to recode DVPPUSHFQ for Egypt 2005 so that persons who have a "No" response in DVPPUSH are coded in DVPPUSHFQ as "Not pushed or shaken" (code 0) rather than "Not in universe" (code 99).

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The wording of the survey question associated with DVPPUSH, to which DVPPUSHFQ is a follow-up, is substantially different for the Zimbabwe 2005 sample than for all other samples that contain the variable. In a single question, the Zimbabwe 2005 survey asks whether the woman's husband/partner had ever done any of the following: pushed her, shaken her, thrown something at her, twisted her arm, or pulled her hair. Thus, DVPPUSHFQ reports the frequency of those actions.

Other samples, including Zimbabwe 2010 and 2015, ask only about the frequency of pushing/shaking/throwing, and they include a separate variable (DVPTWISTFQ) that reports the frequency of arm twisting or hair pulling.
