Codes and Frequencies
HCFMW4 indicates whether the woman reported a "mission mobile clinic" as a source for female condoms. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.
Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
Additionally, HCFMW4 is combined with HCFMW2 and HCFMW3 in HCMPRIVMIS for the 2000 and 2004 Malawi samples.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCFMW4 are encouraged to review HCFPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.
Apart from differences in response categories, HCFMW4 is comparable across samples. For Malawi 2000 and 2004, the header is labeled "mission" with "mobile clinic" as a response. For Malawi 2010, the header combines "mission" and "Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM)," with "mobile clinic" as a response.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.
Though HCFMW4 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCFPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based facilities as sources of female condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCFMW4 or the Comparability tab of HCFPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for Malawi 2000, 2004, and 2010.
