Description

HCMLS3 indicates whether the woman reported a CHAL [Christian Health Association of Lesotho] health post as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Lesotho.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMLS3 is combined with HCMLS1 (CHAL hospital) and HCMLS2 (CHAL health center) in HCMPRIVMIS (all faith-based health facilities) for the 2014 Lesotho sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMLS3 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMLS3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.

Although HCMLS3 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based health facilities as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMLS3 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Lesotho samples.
