Description

HCMPRIVDRUG (V762AK) indicates whether the woman reported a private pharmacy, drug store, or dispensary as a source for male condoms.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of private, formal drug sources that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in HCMPRIVDRUG.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPRIVDRUG (V762AK) has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

In addition to slight universe differences, the wording of this response varies across samples. Most commonly, this response is organized under the "Private Medical Sector" header and is worded as "pharmacy." Some samples combined "pharmacy" with other drug sources, such as "chemist" or "drug store," into a single response.

In other cases, countries separated "pharmacy" and other private, formal drug sources into distinct categories. As this HCMRPIVDRUG focuses on all private, formal drug sources, IPUMS-DHS consolidates these response categories to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMPRIVDRUG (V762AK) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS questionnaire. It is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Samples from Phase III are also included in this variable. For discussion of differences between phases in this variable series, see the Comparability - Standard DHS tab of HCMDK.

Comparability — Chad [top]

The 1996, 2004, and 2014 Chad surveys word this response category as "pharmacy/pharmaceutical depot."

Comparability — Ghana [top]

The Ghana 2003 survey words this category as "pharmacy/chemist/drug store" under the "Private Medical Sector" header.

The Ghana 2008 and 2014 surveys word this category as "pharmacy," but also include a separate category for "chemical/drug store" under the "Private Medical Sector" header. Because HCMPRIVDRUG focuses on all private, formal drug sources, these response categories are consolidated in this variable to form a more comprehensive response. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific responses:

  • Pharmacy is listed as HCMGH1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Chemical/drug store is listed as HCMGH3 in IPUMS-DHS

In the 1998 Ghana survey, under the "Private Medical Sector" header, there are separate categories for "pharmacy," "chemist," and "drug store." These responses are consolidated in HCMPRIVDRUG and are also preserved in the following variables:

  • Chemist is listed as HCMGH6 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Drug store is listed as HCMGH7 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — India [top]

The India 2005 survey words this category as "pharmacy/drugstore."

Comparability — Kenya [top]

The Kenya 2003 and 2008 surveys word this response category as "pharmacy/chemist."

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The Nigeria 2003 survey words this category as "pharmacy/patent medicine store."

Additionally, in the Nigeria 2008 and 2013 surveys, there are separate categories for "pharmacy" and "chemist/PMS [patent medicine store]" under the "Private Medical Sector" header. Because HCMPRIVDRUG focuses on all private, formal drug sources, these response categories are consolidated in HCMPRIVDRUG to form a more comprehensive response. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific responses:

  • Pharmacy is listed as HCMNG1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Chemist/PMS is listed as HCMNG2 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Rwanda [top]

In the 2010 and 2014 Rwanda surveys, there are separate categories for "pharmacy" and "dispensary" under the "Private Medical Sector" header. Because HCMPRIVDRUG focuses on all private, formal drug sources, these response categories are consolidated in this variable to form a more comprehensive response. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific responses:

  • Pharmacy is listed as HCMRW3 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Dispensary is listed as HCMRW4 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

In the 2004 and 2010 Tanzania surveys, there are separate response categories for "pharmacy" and "dispensary" under the "Private Medical Sector" header. Because HCMPRIVDRUG focuses on all private, formal drug sources, these response categories are consolidated in this variable to form a more comprehensive response. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific responses:

  • Pharmacy is listed as HCMTZ8 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Dispensary is listed as HCMTZ9 in IPUMS-DHS
