Description

HCMPRIVFPC indicates whether the woman reported a private family planning clinic or association as a source for male condoms.

IPUMS-DHS users should be careful to distinguish this variable from HCMPUBFPC (public family planning clinic or association).

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPRIVFPC has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Private Medical Sector" header and includes the name of a family planning association within each country. Specific family planning associations are noted below in the country comparability section. Due to variation in category wording, IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tabs for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward. However, HCMPRIVFPC is country-specific and is not a part of the standard DHS questionnaire.

For the Benin samples, the response category refers to the Family Planning Association of Benin (ABPF).

Comparability — Chad [top]

For the 1996, 2004, and 2014 Chad samples, the response category refers to the Chadian Association for Family Well-Being (ASTBEF).

Comparability — Congo Brazzaville [top]

For the 2005 and 2011 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville samples, the response category refers to the "Association Congolaise de Bien-Etre Familial" (ACBEF) - an International Planned Parenthood Federation center based in Republic of the Congo.

For the Ghana samples, the response category refers to the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG).

For the Kenya samples, the response category refers to the Family Planning Association of Kenya (FPAK) or a health center/clinic of the Family Health Organization of Kenya (FHOK).

For the 2007 Liberia sample, the response category refers to a center of the Family Planning Association of Liberia - an International Planned Parenthood Federation center based in Liberia. For the 2013 Liberia sample, the response category refers to a center of the Planned Parenthood Association of Liberia.

For the 2012 Niger sample, the response category refers to a center of the Niger Association for Family Welfare (ANBEF) - an International Planned Parenthood Federation center based in Niger.

Comparability — Rwanda [top]

For the 2005 Rwanda survey, the response category refers to a center of the "Association Rwandaise pour le Bien-Etre Familial" (ARBEF) - an International Planned Parenthood Federation center based in Rwanda.

The 2010 and 2014 samples do not refer specifically to an ARBEF clinic and instead use the broader label "private family planning clinic."
