Description

HCMPRIVFW (V762AN) indicates whether the woman reported a private fieldworker as a source for male condoms.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of private fieldworkers that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in HCMPRIVFW.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPRIVFW (V762AN) has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

Along with universe differences, HCMPRIVFW varies slightly in question wording. Most commonly, this response is worded as "fieldworker" or "health worker" and is organized under the "Private Medical Sector" header in the survey. However, some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response in HCMPRIVFW. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMPRIVFW (V762AN) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS questionnaire. It is removed in phase VI of the standard DHS questionnaire and replaced with "Country-specific private medical sector."

Samples from Phase III are also included in this variable. For discussion of differences between phases in this variable series, see the Comparability - Standard DHS tab of HCMDK.

For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific responses:

  • Community health worker is listed as HCMKE1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Community-based distributor is listed as HCMKE2 in IPUMS-DHS
