Description

HCMSZ5 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported some other type of non-governmental organization (NGO) as a source for male condoms. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific response categories included in a particular sample. This response category is country-specific to Eswatini/Swaziland.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMSZ5 is combined with HCMSZ4 (NGO - FLAS) in HCMNGO (all NGOs) for the 2006 Eswatini/Swaziland sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMSZ5 are encouraged to review HCMNGO for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMSZ5 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.

Although HCMSZ5 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a variable that encompasses all NGOs as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMSZ5 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2006 Eswatini/Swaziland sample.
