Description

HOMETENURE reports the ownership of the dwelling in which the household lives.

The information in HOMETENURE is taken from the household record, linked to the record of the woman respondent. This information applies to household residents, not temporary visitors, so researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2").

Comparability

In addition to slight universe differences and variations in question wording, HOMETENURE's response codes vary across samples. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for HOMETENURE. The first digit indicates whether the household members 1) own the dwelling, 2) are tenants paying rent, or 3) live in the dwelling through some other means (such as squatting). The second digit provides additional detail about tenant status.

HOMETENURE is a country-specific household variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — India [top]

The 2005 Indian survey excluded households that owned their dwelling from this question, as well as excluding people outside a very limited geographic area within India.

The 2005 Senegal survey grouped households with a "long term lease" together with households that owned their dwelling.
