Description

IDEALBTHFUT (V616) reports how long the woman would like to wait before the birth of a/another child.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe over time (see below), IDEALBTHFUT (V616) is largely comparable across samples. Most commonly, women not currently pregnant were asked, "How long would you like to wait from now before the birth of (a/another) child?" Women who were pregnant at the time of interview were asked, "How long would you like to wait after the birth of the child you are expecting before the birth of another child?"

Comparability - Standard DHS

IDEALBTHFUT (V616) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase II forward. In Phase II, the base universe for this variable included only currently married or in-union women who wanted a/another child, while in Phase III forward, the base universe expanded to include all interviewed women who wanted a/another child.
