PNBABCKWHO_ALL (M72_X)
Who performed newborn's postnatal check

PNBABCKWHO_ALL variables are 4-digit variables.

See PNBABCKWHO_01 for the relevant codes.

Description

For women who gave birth in the five years before the survey, and whose child had a health check within two months of delivery, PNBABCKWHO_ALL (M72_X) reports who conducted the child's postpartum health check (for a recent birth). Response categories vary across samples. See Comparability.

PNBABCKWHO_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (PNBABCKWHO_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., PNBABCKWHO_02, PNBABCKWHO_03, PNBABCKWHO_04, PNBABCKWHO_05, and PNBABCKWHO_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If PNBABCKWHO_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, the response categories for PNBABCKWHO_ALL vary across samples.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable PNBABCKWHO_ALL were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in the original DHS variable (M72_X). The major categories are:

  • 1000: Health professionals
  • 2000: Other person

The second, third, and fourth digits of PNBABCKWHO_ALL's codes distinguish between specific locations and provide detail present in only some samples.

When response categories include non-standard groupings, IPUMS-DHS codes those groupings as a sub-category under the most qualified of the group (e.g., "Doctor/clinical officer" (code "1130") is a sub-category of "Doctor" (code "1100")).

Surveys that collected information on who gave the health check for more than just the most recent birth are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

PNBABCKWHO_ALL (M72_X) is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

The 2008 Egypt survey collected this information for all births in the reference period.
