Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADGH1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a private pharmacy for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Ghana.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADGH1 is combined with STIADGH2 (private chemical/drug store) in STIADPRIVDRUG (all private, formal drug sources) for the 2008 and 2014 Ghana samples.

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADGH1 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVDRUG for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADGH1 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Though STIADGH1 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVDRUG, a standard variable that encompasses all private, formal drug sources as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADGH1 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVDRUG for more information on the specific categories combined for the Ghana samples.
