Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADOTHDRUG indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from an informal drug or street vendor for this problem.

Users should be careful to distinguish this variable from STIADPUBDRUG and STIADPRIVDRUG, which refer to public drug sources and private, formal drug sources, respectively.

Comparability

The wording of the response category for STIADOTHDRUG varies slightly across samples. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.

Drug vendors/stores appear to be distinct from pharmacies in countries that have this response category. Drug vendors may be licensed to sell prescription and nonprescription drug treatments with some restrictions (antibiotics, for example); some drug vendors are unlicensed and thus are less well-regulated.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman sought advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI in the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although responses in this variable are country-specific and not included in the standard DHS modules, they are integrated in STIADOTHDRUG to increase comparability across samples.
