Description

ORSJO4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a private GP (general practitioner) clinic as a source for oral rehydration solution (ORS). ORS is typically used to treat dehydration in individuals with diarrhea. This response is country-specific to Jordan.

Some samples in the "ORS" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

ORSJO4 is combined with ORSJO3 (private hospital) and ORSJO5 (private specialist clinic) in ORSPRIVHOS (all private hospitals/clinics) for the 1990 Jordan sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ORSJO4 are encouraged to review ORSPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

ORSJO4 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

A question about sources of ORS is included in Phase II of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although ORSJO4 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in ORSPRIVHOS, a variable that encompasses all private hospitals/clinics as a source for ORS. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of ORSJO4 or the Comparability tab of ORSPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Jordan 1990.
