Description

For women who gave birth in the last three to five years, DELML3_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a midwife gave delivery care for a recent birth. This response category is country-specific to Mali.

DELML3_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELML3_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELML3_02, DELML3_03, DELML3_04, DELML3_05, and DELML3_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELML3_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Some samples in the "DEL" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

DELML3_ALL is combined with DELML1_ALL (obstetrics nurse) and DELML2_ALL (other nurse) for the 2006 Mali sample to create the standard variable DELNURM_ALL. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DELML3_ALL are encouraged to review DELNURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, DELML3_ALL has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about who provided delivery care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Though DELML3_ALL is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in DELNURM_ALL, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of delivery care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of DELML3_ALL or the Comparability tab of DELNURM_ALL for more information on the specific categories combined for Mali 2006.
