Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and had experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner, DVRINJURY (D110B) indicates whether, because of her husband's/partner's actions, the woman ever suffered some "other" injury not covered by the complementary variable DVRSERINJURY (D110D).

The particular injuries covered by DVRINJURY vary across samples. Please consult the "Comparability" tab for more information.

Comparability

There are differences in both question wording and universes that limit the comparability of DVRINJURY across samples.

The majority of samples ask whether the woman ever had eye injuries, sprains, dislocations, or burns. However, many samples include other injuries as a result of violence. Only samples that depart from the norm and samples that have universe comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVRINJURY (D110B) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases IV, V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

In the first version of the standard domestic violence module, which was used alongside the standard DHS questionnaire through Phase IV, the respondent was asked whether she experienced "an injury or a broken bone."

From the second version forward of the standard domestic violence module, which was used alongside the standard DHS questionnaire beginning in Phase V, this question was separated into two parts. In the first, the respondent was asked whether she experienced "eye injuries, sprains, dislocations, or burns." In the second, the respondent was asked whether she experienced "deep wounds, broken bones, broken teeth, or any other serious injury," the result of which can be found in DVRSERINJURY (D110D).

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

The Burkina Faso 2010 survey asks whether the woman ever had an injury, a broken bone, or a sprain.

Comparability — Cote d'Ivoire [top]

The Côte d’Ivoire 2011 survey asks whether the woman ever had an injury, a broken bone, or a sprain.

Comparability — Ghana [top]

The Egypt 2005 survey asks whether the woman ever had an injury or broken bone.

Comparability — India [top]

The India 2005 survey asks whether the woman ever had eye injuries, sprains, dislocations, or minor burns.

Comparability — Kenya [top]

The universe for most samples that contain DVRINJURY includes women who had ever experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner. However, the Kenya 2003 sample includes women who had ever been married, without necessarily having experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner.

Analysts who wish to improve comparability between the Kenya 2003 sample and other samples may wish to restrict the Kenya 2003 sample by conditioning on a "Yes" response to any one of the following: DVPLSEVER (D106), DVPMSEVER (D107), DVPSEXEVER (D108).

The Kenya 2003 survey additionally has a potential question wording comparability problem, and asks whether the woman ever had an injury or broken bone.

The Kenya 2008 and 2014 surveys do not share Kenya 2003's question wording or universe comparability problems.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

The universe for most samples that contain DVRINJURY includes women who had ever experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner. However, the Malawi 2004 sample includes women who had ever been married, without necessarily having experienced physical or sexual violence from their husband/partner.

Analysts who wish to improve comparability between the Malawi 2004 sample and other samples may wish to restrict the Malawi 2004 sample by conditioning on a "Yes" response to any one of the following: DVPLSEVER (D106), DVPMSEVER (D107), DVPSEXEVER (D108).

The Malawi 2004 survey additionally has a potential question wording comparability problem, and asks whether the woman ever had an injury or broken bone.

The Malawi 2010 and 2016 surveys do not share Malawi 2004's question wording or universe comparability problems.

Comparability — Mali [top]

The Mali 2006 survey asks whether the woman ever had a wound, broken bone, or sprain.

The Mali 2012 survey does not share Mali 2006's question wording comparability issue.

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The Nigeria 2008 survey asks whether the woman ever had eye injuries, sprains, dislocations, or minor burns.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.
