Geographic tools for IPUMS-DHS

Spatially harmonized and year-specific geography

IPUMS DHS provides both harmonized (integrated) and year-specific geographic variables. Harmonized variables provide consistent geographic units for a country across samples years, facilitating comparisons across time. Year-specific variables retain all geographic detail from each sample and are not consistent over time.

Geography crosswalks to IPUMS International census microdata

Census-DHS: First administrative level of geography

The spatially consistent variables at the primary level of geography within countries allow researchers to summarize subnational census data from IPUMS International and attach them as contextual information to IPUMS DHS samples, or to summarize DHS data to censuses.

Census-DHS: Second administrative level of geography

Sample clusters from The DHS Program are assigned to the second administrative level of subnational geography in IPUMS International, allowing researchers to summarize lower-level census data and attach them as contextual variables to IPUMS DHS samples.

Displaced GPS points of DHS Clusters

IPUMS DHS disseminates the displaced GPS latitude and longitude data for DHS clusters to users who are authorized by the DHS Program to access them through the online data dissemination system. See the variable GPSLATLONG for more details.
