Census-DHS Geography Crosswalk: First Administrative Level

First-administrative-level crosswalk variables identify geographic units in IPUMS-DHS countries that match those in the IPUMS International census samples. The variables correspond to the primary level of geography in both databases. The spatially consistent variables shared by the two databases allow researchers to summarize census data and attach the results as contextual information to the DHS samples. Conversely, researchers can summarize DHS data and attach it to censuses, with the understanding that confidence intervals may be large. GIS shapefiles are available at the links below.
